The ECSAS (European Conference for South Asian Studies) has met regularly since 1968, and has provided an important opportunity to discuss current research and scholarship on topics relating to South Asia within the humanities and social sciences. The ECSAS conferences now operate under the auspices of the European Association for South Asian Studies (EASAS), a charitable, academic association engaged in the support of research and teaching concerning South Asia with regard to all periods and fields of study.
The 27th ECSAS will take place in Turin, Italy, from 26 to 29 July 2023.
The conference will be held at Campus Luigi Einaudi.
The conference is organized and hosted by the University of Turin – Dept of Humanities, Dept of Cultures, Politics and Societies, Dept of Law, Dept. of Foreign Languages, Interdipartimental Centre “Istituto di Studi sull’Asia” ISA. Turin is the cradle of the Italian Indological Studies, that had a beginning in 1852 when a chair in Sanskrit Studies was established at the University, where a fertile ground had already been created by the tradition of near East teachings, established at the University the year after its foundation in 1405. In the second part of the 20th century the study of South Asia was renewed, combining social science-based methods and findings with those of classical Indology. South Asian Studies in Italy covers today a wide range of disciplines and interests, and extends across several institutions. Thinking of future, the motto of the Turin ECSAS conference will be “Building sustainable research networks,” aiming to build creative and productive research communities. Such communities can encourage connectedness between people, deepen the capacity for supportive collegiality, and foster a holistic social learning milieu to support researchers of all levels.
